The availability of the RMI Dourbes comprehensive ionosonde database and the immediate access to high-quality digisonde measurements allowed the RMI scientists to do valuable research and developments. For example, the RMI Ionospheric section team developed a novel operational system based on measurements from the collocated Digisonde and a GNSS receiver in Dourbes.
We currently provide three geomagnetic services to airports in the Benelux & abroad:

- Runway azimuth orientation
- Supply of isogonal information and maps
Soils contain magnetic minerals resulting from natural processes and human activities (industrial combustion, fire places). Magnetic susceptibility mapping gives you a quick overview about the natural magnetic enhancements in soils, the extent of soil pollution or localises archaeological artefacts in the shallow subsurface.
The modern-day society relies heavily on operational technological systems using radio waves: ground-to-ground and ground-to-satellite telecommunications, radars, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) such as GPS or GALILEO. Space Weather phenomena are often the origin of disturbed ionospheric conditions which can strongly affect the performances of technological systems based on radio waves. Therefore, it is indispensable to monitor, model and forecast the ionospheric activity and its effects on these technological systems.
